Playboy: Cheerleading coach to pose nude again http://sarilocker.com/blog/2009/04/23/playboy-cheerleading-coach-to-pose-nude-again/ Thu, 23 Apr 2009 16:45:38 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=991 Last week on CNN HLN with Mike Galanos, I discussed Carlie Beck, the 20 year old cheerleading coach who was fired from Casa Roble High School in Orangevale, California, after it was revealed that she posed nude for Playboy’s website as a “Playboy Cyber Girl of the Week.” Well, now she’s moving up. It was just announced that she will be “Playboy Cyber Girl of the Month for June.”

On CNN HLN, I discussed both sides of the issue of her firing. Carlie has every right to pose nude, if that’s what she wants to do. She seemingly tried to separate her high school coaching from her nude modeling, since she used a different last name to pose — Carlie Christine — and the nude pictures are only available with a credit card. On the other hand, teens must be taught to not pose for risqué or nude photos, and that anything they put online can have serious consequences. So, their cheerleading coach obviously was sending the wrong message to her cheerleaders. Also, since one of the cheerleaders knew about the pictures and told the principal, then Carlie must have told that cheerleader about it. It is highly unlike that one of her students would have just happened onto the photos, because they were posted on an interior page of the site amid dozens of 1 inch square images of other nude women.  So if Carlie told the students where to look that would have been inappropriate.

The moral of the story, however, is not about whether her firing was right or wrong. It’s that the firing made her “famous.” Instead of illustrating how nude pictures can hurt someone’s life, now Carlie gets exactly what she wants. She wanted to be a well-known model, which is why she posed nude. If she hadn’t been fired, then no one would have noticed her nude pictures in the sea of other pictorials of attractive nude 20 year olds. Now she’ll be the girl of the month, instead of just the girl of the week. All her dreams are coming true, thanks to the scorned cheerleader who precipitated her firing.  If she gets her way, then by next year, she may even get into the actual Playboy magazine! Maybe she’ll aim even higher and strive to be the next “Girl Next Door,” and move in with Hef. Wonder what message that would give the girls she used to coach.

Sexing on CNN and American Idol http://sarilocker.com/blog/2009/01/14/sexing-on-cnn-and-american-idol/ Wed, 14 Jan 2009 14:38:56 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=529 There’s another story in the news about teens’ sexting nude pictures. This time, however, the teens are being charged with child porn! Read about it here. (For more on sexting, read my December 4th, 6th, 10th, 12th blog posts.) I talked about the story today in my usual spot with Mike Galanos on CNN Headline News. The other guest was former sex crimes prosecutor Wendy Murphy, who was great. A caller told us that she thinks the reason why teen girls send teen nude pictures is because of our oversexed media culture. Her example: Bikini Girl from last night’s American Idol audition. The media is only a part of the story, as I have previously discussed in this blog. Of course, I couldn’t resist going off-topic to address Bikini Girl, and to say: Why didn’t Paula or Kara admonish her, and let her know that it is completely inappropriate to wear a bathing suit to an audition?! Wendy Murphy agreed, and added that it wasn’t only the female judges’ responsibility, Simon and Randy should have chimed in, too.

“Sex Acts” in Class: CNN’s Mike Galanos http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/12/12/sex-acts-in-class-cnns-mike-galanos/ Fri, 12 Dec 2008 02:56:40 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=422 Today, my segment on Mike Galanos’ show on CNN Headline News focused on a story from Glades Middle School in Miramar, Florida, where children and teens may have been involved in some sort of sex related misconduct in a classroom – while the teacher was present. It was a very unusual story, and details of the situation have yet to be fully disclosed. The school did not state whether the students were touching others, or whether the misconduct involved touching themselves or revealing themselves with no contact.

Detroit Sex Crime: CNN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/12/11/detroit-sex-crime-cnns-jane-velez-mitchell/ Thu, 11 Dec 2008 02:01:24 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=409 The story I discussed on Jane Velez-Mitchell‘s terrific new CNN Headline News show comes from Detroit, where a teenager’s mother was arrested for allegedly holding a party to prostitute her daughter and another teen. Of course, the headlines about this story in print and on television read “sex party” instead of “sex crime.”

Sexting: I’ll be talking about it on CNN Today http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/12/04/sexting-ill-be-talking-about-it-on-cnn-today/ Thu, 04 Dec 2008 13:10:49 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=363

Teen girls sent naked pics and now parents are suing school

By Jessica Blanchard, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“Parents of two Bothell High School cheerleaders have sued the Northshore School District, alleging school officials erred when they suspended the girls from the team this year after nude photos of them circulated throughout the student body via text message.  School officials learned of the photos in August after receiving copies from a source they have not named, according to the lawsuits. In early September, the two teens were suspended from the cheer squad — one for 30 days and the other for the entire school year. Both lawsuits, filed Monday in King County Superior Court, accuse school administrators of violating the girls’ due process rights, needlessly sharing the photos with other school staff members and failing to promptly report the matter to police as possible child pornography.  Attorney Matthew King, who represents both families, said it also was troubling that the teens were punished, but football players and other students at the school who sent or received the texts were not.”  This is the link to the full story.

CNN with Perez Hilton http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/09/08/cnn-with-perez-hilton/ Mon, 08 Sep 2008 22:37:08 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=216 I just got off the air from the appearance during which I discussed the MTV Video Music Awards. See the photo below of me standing in front of the camera. Host Mike Galanos is based in Atlanta, so I was on via satellite from CNN’s gorgeous studio in NYC. In two segments, Perez Hilton and I discussed Jordin Sparks’ remark defending purity rings. Also on the air for the first segment was Joanna Weiss who wrote about this story for the Boston Globe. I agree with Perez Hilton that Jordin was right to say something, and given the fact that her remark was unrehearsed, she did fine. However, it is wrong to classify people — as she did — as either virgins or sluts. It’s the myth of that dichotomy that often keeps us from discussing the reality of most teens’ and young twentysomething’s sex lives. Most teens and twentysomethings have sex in the context of relationships, and at least 87% use birth control. Perhaps teens could feel more comfortable talking about sex with mom and dad if their parents understood that when teens have sex it is not always harmful or ”bad.” Perhaps teens would also feel more comfortable reaching out to get sex education if they knew that our culture would not categorize them as a “slut” if they responsibly choose to have sex.

“I Kissed a Girl” See me on CNN, Today at 5 pm http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/08/25/%e2%80%9ci-kissed-a-girl%e2%80%9d-see-me-on-cnn-today-at-5-pm/ http://sarilocker.com/blog/2008/08/25/%e2%80%9ci-kissed-a-girl%e2%80%9d-see-me-on-cnn-today-at-5-pm/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2008 01:12:50 +0000 http://sarilocker.com/blog/?p=162 Today on CNN Headline News at 5 pm, I’ll be talking about the Katy Perry song, “I Kissed a Girl (and I liked it)”, and whether the song could pressure teenage girls and college women to be interested in same-sex kissing. Preview…

Most often when a teen girl or college women identifies herself as heterosexual, but chooses to kiss another girl or women, it is because she feels attracted to the other person, because she is striving to define her sexual orientation for herself, because she is curious, or because of any number of other personal reasons. Could they be pressured by a pop song? It’s possible, but unlikely. Possibly, and stereotypically, IF a woman feels any pressure to kiss someone of the same gender, then that pressure could be coming from a guy and alcohol could be involved – as depicted in Katy Perry’s song. Her catchy besong is not so troubling to me, but it’s the video that I find offensive. It’s anti-woman and anti-feminist. Katy Perry’s album is called “One of the Boys,” and that’s exactly what the “I Kissed a Girl” video is about. She is pandering to a male heterosexual fantasy to sell CDs. The video is not all bad. Some of it is sexy and sensual, and some images simply allude to sex, including Katy on a bed stroking a pussy cat. But the disturbing images are those in which her harem of black-lace clad women are depicted not as whole people, but rather in pieces – a shoulder, a leg, a neck — seemingly dismembered women. The still shot below is taken from the video.  The image is shown in the video just as it is here, with no context. She is not seen going under the couch, nor does she leave the couch. Is it a sexual joke that I’m missing? Are they just trying to come up with something “edgy” and unusual? Or is it solely intended to degrade women? Drop me a note if you have any thoughts on this image.
