I was recently interviewed by Salon. com about the impact that Dr. Ruth Westheimer has had on my career. It was amazing to reflect on exactly how much I’ve followed in Dr. Ruth’s footsteps. As you’ll read in the article on Salon, Dr. Ruth forged the path that allowed me to become a media sex educator. I owe her a debt of gratitude, as does everyone who appears on TV or radio to talk about sex. The interview was sponsored by Cole Haan. As that company celebrates its 85th anniversary, it is honoring icons like Dr. Ruth who were born in 1928. This series of articles on Salon is called, “Inspiration Foundations,” and it pairs contemporaries with those being honored to show the influence they’ve had on us. Those born in 1928 who are included are: Dr. Maya Angelou, Capt. James Lovell, Elliott Erwitt, China Machado, Vidal Sassoon, Dr. Ruth, Andy Warhol, and Maurice Sendak.

Today, I was a guest on Up Close with Diana Williams on WABC TV Channel 7. Diana is an incredibly gracious host — intelligent, warm, and interesting. Below is a screen shot. We discussed sexting, as it relates to Anthony Weiner, as well as how it affects relationships in general. We also talked about teen sexting, and touched on what parents can do to prevent it. I’m glad that at least the Weiner story can used be a “teachable moment.”

The O’Reilly Factor Tonight

I was on The O’Reilly Factor tonight. Bill was on vacation, and Laura Ingraham was the guest host. We were supposed to talk about the increase in the birth rate among people of all ages, including teens and twentysomethings. However, instead Laura only asked me about abstinence ed funding and Planned Parenthood. She’s always interesting to work with, because her questions and comments can be surprising. At least I had the chance to remind her audience that most Americans want comprehensive sexuality education to be in schools for their children and teens.
