Sex Advice

Dear Dr. Locker: I'm just wondering if it is illegal to buy condoms if you're under 18.

Answer from Dr. Locker

It is LEGAL to buy condoms, no matter how old you are. I understand why you're wondering – you have to be 18 to buy magazines like Playboy, and you have to be 21 to buy alcohol. But thank goodness you can buy condoms at any age, since condoms protect sexual health and prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are very easy to buy, as long as you don't feel embarrassed about buying them. They're sold in almost every drug store, supermarket, at gas stations, and online, even at amazon.com. They cost about $1.50 for 3 condoms, and you should always buy more than you think you'll need in case you put one on wrong, and need to start over again. You must become used to feeling comfortable buying condoms. And you don't need to feel self-conscious – when you buy a box of condoms, be proud that you're smart enough to protect yourself! Just remember that sex is a responsibility, and teens under 18 (and everyone else) need to be sure that they are emotionally ready and that the circumstances are right for them.
