Dear Dr. Locker: I am a 22 year old woman, and have been masturbating since I was 4. Rubbing my vagina made me very happy then, so I've done it ever since. I do it to orgasm about once a week. Is it dangerous? Will I be able to conceive?
Answer from Dr. Locker
Masturbation is normal and not dangerous. Most adults know that it is fine to masturbate. However, it is important that I am including this question here to illustrate that there still are adults, who worry that masturbation may be harmful. Where do myths and misunderstandings about masturbation come from? Often religion is the culprit, since some religions teach that masturbation is sinful. Other times, it’s simply the secrecy or privacy shrouding masturbation that keeps people worrying that they need to stop doing it. However it is that you came to feel worried about it, I am here to tell you that masturbation is natural. It does not affect fertility or conception. It does not cause acne, nor does it cause hair to grow on your palms. It does not make you less sexually responsive, and, in fact, may make you enjoy sex with a partner more since you already know your body and know how to have orgasms. Keep masturbating, and keep enjoying your sexuality with no worries... and no guilt.
